Back in 2019, the Jacksonville Jaguars went 5-11. But in spite of their record, there were many reasons for optimism. The biggest one was probably that then-rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew was the talk of the NFL. On top of that, the Sacksonville defense was still stacked with talent and wreaking havoc across the league. Circling back to Minshew, he found success right away in part because he was throwing passes to wide receiver DJ Chark Jr.
That year, Chark turned heads, hauling in 73 for 1,008 yards with eight touchdowns. At the time, it seemed like he was an ascending star. However, injuries derailed his stint with the Jags, and after several stops in the NFL, he's chosen to hang up his cleats.
Former Jaguars receiver DJ Chark announced his retirement
DJ Chark announced his retirement on social media following a seven-year career in the NFL. Here's some of what he had to say.
"After much contemplation, I have decided to share a proper farewell as I navigate retirement," Chark wrote on Instagram. "My journey began at the age of 7 when I signed up for football, unaware of the profound impact it would have on my life. I simply loved the sport and had the unwavering support of my parents. Years later, I received the support of my wife, kids, family, and thousands of fans! As I write this, I reflect on the challenges I've faced and overcome, as well as the rewards I've reaped."
Chark continued, I've learned to appreciate every experience and not take any of them for granted. As I enter this next chapter of my life, I remain committed to being an active pillar in my community, empowering the youth through charitable work. The possibilities ahead are endless, and that excites me. I am grateful for all my teammates, fans, and every organization I have had the privilege to play for. All glory goes to God; I am forever thankful."
Here's the post on Instagram in case you want to give it a look:
As noted before, Chark's best season came in 2019. Expected to take another step in 2020, he was instead held back by injuries and poor quarterback play. Nevertheless, the former LSU Tiger still managed to catch 53 passes for 706 yards with five touchdowns. Just recently, he recalled the 2020 spiral that led to Trevor Lawrence, noting that the team often didn't know who would start behind center Sunday.
Then, Urban Meyer took over in 2021, and once again, he was struck by the injury bug. This time, a fractured foot cut his season short after just four games.
Doug Pederson became the head coach in 2022, and Jacksonville moved on from Chark. He bolted for the Detroit Lions but was once and done. He signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2023 and spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024.
Although Chark joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2025 in hopes of getting his NFL career going, he was cut before the regular season. Since then, he had remained unsigned. That might've led the Alexandria native to step away from football.
Throughout his stops in the NFL, Chark appeared in 76 games with 51 starts, hauling in 216 passes for 3,100 yards with 24 touchdowns.
Appreciating DJ Chark Jr.'s stint with the Jaguars
DJ Chark Jr. was on his way to becoming a WR1 when injuries derailed his career. At one point, the Jags simply had to move on from him, but it's fair to wonder what could have been if he had stayed healthy after his Pro Bowl season in 2018.
The fact that Chark wasn't able to stay injury-free might have also played a role in his decision to announce his retirement. Think about it, having to go through rehab every year just to be ready on game day and perform at a high level can be taxing. Moreover, he surely was thinking about his future and having a quality life with his family.
From an outside perspective, it's hard to tell if teams were still reaching out to him, but if the calls stopped coming, it wouldn't have made sense for Chark to hold onto his NFL. The truth is that it probably wasn't an easy decision, but he did it with his best interest and family in mind, and that's worth recognition.
