Final Jaguars injury report for Week 15 nearly empty but comes with massive inclusion
The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost several key contributors to injury this season and missed yet another one ahead of Week 15. Ahead of the matchup against the New York Jets, head coach Doug Pederson said that the team will be placing Evan Engram on Injury Reserve, effectively ending the season. The silver lining is that the veteran tight end may be their only player who'll be unavailable Sunday.
The Jags posted their final injury report for Week 15 and Engram was the only player who popped up. He's already been ruled out, and it may be a matter of time before they officially place him on IR.
Engram hurt his shoulder in the 10-6 win over the Tennessee Titans. Pederson said Wednesday that the former Ole Miss Rebel was going to miss practice that day but should otherwise be available against New York. However, he also was a non-participant Thursday and the head coach ultimately announced Friday that the team would put him on IR, effectively ending his season.
Earlier this season, Engram also missed four games with a hamstring injury. He ended up appearing in nine games, hauling in 47 yards with 365 yards with one touchdown. During his absence, sophomore Brenton Strange filled in for him, catching 12 receptions for 120 yards with two touchdowns.
Strange will once will be thrust into action and may be given a chance to show he deserves a featured role beyond 2024. Below is the full injury report.
On the opposite sideline, New York has already ruled out cornerback Brandin Echols (shoulder), and running back Kene Nwangwu (hand). Cornerback D.J. Reed and offensive lineman Xavier Newman are both dealing with groin injuries and both of them got the doubtful destination. running back Breece Hall (knee), offensive tackle Morgan Moses ()wrist), and offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) are listed as questionable.
The Jaguars have favorable matchup vs. Jets injuries in Week 15, even without Evan Engram
The Jacksonville Jaguars have already been eliminated from playoff contention but will do their best to fend off the equally struggling New York Jets in Week 15. Working in their favor is that they'll be relatively healthy.
Granted, losing Trevor Lawrence and Evan Engram stings, but no other Jaguar is dealing with nagging injuries, at least this week. That could ultimately give them an edge. The Jets are currently a 3.5-point favorite, but the game will be at EverBank Stadium. Add the fact that the Jacksonville defense has gelled in recent weeks while the Jets' offense has struggled, and there's a legitimate chance that the Jags will come out on top even without Engram.
After all, Brenton Strange has turned out to be a more than capable replacement. That said, Mac Jones will need to play much better than he has in recent weeks, something he's fully aware of.
In conclusion, it stings to see Evan Engram's season come to an abrupt end. However, the show must go on and the Jaguars have more than enough talent to beat the Jets.
