Following an electrifying rookie campaign in 2024, Brian Thomas Jr. was expected to take the next step and join the top echelon of NFL receivers. However, he's been underwhelming and one of the reasons the Jacksonville Jaguars haven't been able to get their passing going.

But despite his struggles, Thomas wasn't an NFL writer's choice for the Jags' most underwhelming player so far this season. Instead, Trevor Lawrence got the nod.

Trevor Lawrence was named the most disappointing Jaguars player

Brad Gagnon picked the most disappointing player for each NFL team and chose Trevor Lawrence for the Jaguars, noting that the fifth-year quarterback's production doesn't match his salary. Below's the skinny.

"Lawrence's 80.6 passer rating is actually his worst since his rookie season. It's become ridiculous for the fourth-highest-paid player in the sport."

All things considered, Gagnon makes a couple of compelling points. Not only has Lawrence struggled, but he's done it while being tied with Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Jordan Love for the second-highest paid quarterback after signing a five-year, $275 million deal in 2024.

And that's the thing, Lawrence isn't a rookie but a veteran who should be able to carry the team on his shoulders. That hasn't happened this season. Then again, No. 16's numbers would look much better if he had a bit of help.

The offensive line has struggled, giving up a concerning 62 total pressures and 10 sacks in back-to-back losses. No quarterback will be able to thrive without having enough time to throw the football. Moreover, Jaguars receivers lead the NFL with 21 drops. Simply, Lawrence isn't getting enough help.

That said, Lawrence is the face of the franchise and he's been unable to elevate his team. That's why it makes sense that he got the nod for Jacksonville's most disappointing player. On the other hand, Brian Thomas Jr. also has a strong case.

Why Brian Thomas Jr. deserves consideration for the Jaguars' most disappointing player

One reason Brian Thomas Jr. might not have gotten the dubious distinction of being the most disappointing Jaguars player this season is that he's still on his rookie deal, unlike Trevor Lawrence, who's getting top-market compensation for his services. But that doesn't absolve the sophomore wideout from his shortcomings.

Thomas hauled in 82 receptions for 1,282 yards with 10 touchdowns in 2024. However, he's had a hard time having that kind of impact seven games into this season. In particular, the former LSU Tiger has failed to reel in routine catches over the middle of the field, and his six drops lead the team. Granted, he isn't the only Jags receiver struggling, but he's supposed to be the best of the bunch. That's why he's been heavily scrutinized.

In his defense, Thomas dealt with a wrist injury early in the season. Moreover, there's a theory making the rounds on social media that he's mourning the loss of close friend Kyren Lacy. That seems reasonable. It's also possible that the Louisiana native has failed to fully grasp Liam Coen's scheme.

But regardless of the reason, you cannot deny that Brian Thomas Jr. has been underwhelming, even if he didn't get the vote for the most disappointing Jaguar thus far. The good news is that he still has time this season to get back on track. It will be up to him to seize the opportunity.
