In the midst of a series of controversies, Brendan Sorsby applied to enter the NFL supplemental draft. In spite of his red flags, several clubs could make a bid for the former Cincinnati quarterback. While the Jacksonville Jaguars don't appear to be a logical fit, he would most definitely give them a boost at quarterback.

Make no mistake, Trevor Lawrence is firmly entrenched as the starter behind center. However, Jacksonville could use depth behind him. A couple of AFC South quarterbacks could make sense as trade targets, but the team's brass could also use a draft pick on Sorsby.

Why the Jaguars should set their sights on Brendan Sorsby

Brendan Sorsby applied for the supplemental draft because he wasn't eligible to play in 2026 due to gambling issues. While he was granted a temporary injunction to suit up, Texas Tech made it clear that he wouldn't play for them next season. That led him to the decision to apply for the supplemental draft.

Sorsby's application has yet to be processed, but if he does qualify for the supplemental draft, teams can bid a draft pick of any round. If they get the player, they forfeit that draft pick the following year. For instance, if the Jags landed Sorsby with a third-round pick, they would lose that pick in 2027. This begs the question, how much would the controversial quarterback be worth?

If it weren't for the gambling issues, he would be a first-round talent. Jordan Reid of ESPN believes he has the tools to develop into a long-term starter. Having said that, it's hard to see a team making that kind of investment in such a risky player. But how about a Day 3 pick? Anything from a fifth to a seventh-round pick would most definitely make sense.

Brendan Sorsby would give the Jaguars an intriguing developmental QB

The Jaguars have a solid but not great backup quarterback in Nick Mullens. He's entering a contract year, so the team could have the chance to bolster the position if he leaves in 2027. Carter Bradley could be an option, but it wouldn't hurt Jacksonville to take a flyer on Brendan Sorsby if all it took was a late-round selection.

The Jags could groom Sorsby as a potential heir apparent to Mullens instead of making a big investment in a backup quarterback in free agency next year. If he flops, all they had to give up was a low draft pick. Basically, it would be a low-risk, high-reward kind of investment.

It's also worth pointing out that Sorsby could face a suspension from the NFL, but as Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union suggested, that could work in Jacksonville's favor, as the team's brass wouldn't have to allocate a roster spot for him for as long as he's suspended.

Of course, the Jaguars may not want to have anything to do with Brendan Sorsby after his gambling controversy, but they should at least give it a thought, as it could pay big dividends down the stretch.
