Defensive end Myles Garrett broke the internet when he announced that he wanted the Cleveland Browns to trade him, citing his desire to win a Super Bowl as the reason. It's fair to say that based on his request, he doesn't think that will be happening in Cleveland. Now, the Browns may not want to part ways with the star pass rusher, but if he forces their hand, they will have no choice. If that's the case, the Jacksonville Jaguars could make a run for him.
Granted, trading for Garrett would be cost-prohibitive for the Jags. They would have to give up significant compensation in exchange for him, at least a first-round pick, and probably a lot more. On top of that, they've already made a strong commitment to franchise cornerstones such as Trevor Lawrence, Josh Hines-Allen, and Tyson Campbell. Aside from that, new head coach Liam Coen may want to prioritize building a strong foundation over short-term success.
Having said that, players of Garrett's caliber aren't usually available, and Jacksonville should at least do due diligence if he ends up in the trading block. After all, the first overall pick in the 2017 draft has registered 102.5 sacks the last eight years and has recorded Pro Football Focus overall grades of 90.0 or higher for four straight seasons. This is to say that the Jaguars pass rush could go from good to great with the first overall pick in the 2017 draft in the fold.
So for the sake of the argument, let's say the Jaguars show interest, here are three proposals they could make to acquire Myles Garrett via trade.
The Jaguars offer 4 draft picks for Myles Garrett: 2 firsts, 1 second, and 1 third
Browns general manager Andrew Berry has clearly stated that he wouldn't trade Myles Garrett for two first-round selections, but a potential suitor could put together an offer that it's good to refuse. Here's one the Jags can make to get a deal done.
The Jaguars give Cleveland a first and second-round picks in 2025 and a first and third next year. That should be more than enough to get the Browns to listen. The downside of this proposal is that it only makes sense if Jacksonville thinks adding Garrett to a pass rush that includes Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen will propel them to the Super Bowl. Maybe not.
The Jaguars offer 2 first-round picks and Walker Little for Myles Garrett
If the Jaguars want to keep their second and third-round picks, here's an alternative. They just signed left tackle Walker Little to a three-year deal worth $45 million in 2024, but you could make the case that he's not nearly as indispensable as either Trevor Lawrence or Josh Hines-Allen.
Sure, trading Little would create a need at left tackle and leave $24 million in dead money, but the Jags would land Garrett and could add a new blindside protector for Trevor Lawrence with the second-rounder they get to keep.
The Jaguars offer 1 first-round pick, 1 second-rounder, and Travon Walker to pair Myles Garrett with Josh Hines-Allen
If the Jaguars want to keep a first-round pick and their blindside protector, and still trade for Myles Garrett, they would need to part ways with a star player, someone like Travon Walker. The former Georgia Bulldog is coming off back-to-back 10-sack seasons but isn't currently in the echelon of pass rushers as his Browns counterpart.
Still, Walker has upside and has one year left on his rookie deal (and his fifth-year option), so he could be a potential replacement for Garrett in Cleveland. Sure, the Jags would like to keep one of their young building blocks around but they would get to pair Garrett with Josh Hines-Allen.
