OT Anton Harrison goes to Jacksonville Jaguars in CBS Sports 2023 NFL Mock Draft
The Jacksonville Jaguars seem to be comfortable letting right tackle Jawaan Taylor leave in free agency due to the presence of Walker Little. But if the team’s brass wants to add another option, they should then look at the draft, and Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports thinks Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison would be a good pick at No. 24.
Trapasso has the Jags taking Harrison in his latest mock draft, arguing that the Oklahoma product would be a good replacement for Taylor, “this pick is to better protect Trevor Lawrence and to fill in the likely spot vacated by impending free agent Jawaan Taylor”.
Todd McShay of ESPN also thinks Harrison could be a late first-round selection and has him going to the Cincinnati Bengals. He was a four-star prospect coming out of high school who appeared in 34 collegiate games with 24 starts, 23 at left tackle and one at right tackle. If the Jaguars drafted him, he would be making the switch to right tackle full-time, with Cam Robinson firmly entrenched as the starter on the left side.
Brandon Thorn of the Bleacher Report scouting department describes Harrison as a “tone-setting presence at tackle“. On the other hand, he thinks he needs to work on creating better angles and his overall pass-blocking technique.
"Overall, Harrison is a tone-setting presence at tackle with the size, length, core strenth, and heavy hands to back it up, plus good movement skills to protect the corner and track targets on the move."
The Jacksonville Jaguars could indeed select Anton Harrison at No. 24
This isn’t the first time an offensive tackle is mocked to Jacksonville at No. 24. Florida’s O’Cyrus Torrence has been also brought up as a potential target for the Jaguars’ front office in the first round and it’s easy to see why.
Taylor improved considerably in 2022 and his departure would potentially leave a void at right tackle. However, it’s important to note that Walker Little competed for the starting job in training camp and it was a close battle. Despite the fact that Little is a more natural fit on the left side, he’s shown starting potential and could grow more accustomed to lining up at right tackle if he got an extended number of reps this offseason.
Having said that, the Jaguars will reportedly look for a swing tackle in the draft if Taylor leaves, which seems inevitable. What isn’t clear it’s whether it would be in the first round. Cornerback is their biggest need this offseason but if Torrence or Harrison is their highest-graded prospects on their big board at No. 24, they could afford to take a corner until the second round because this class is stacked with talent at the position. Heck, the Jaguars could also target Michael Mayer or any of the other top tight end prospects in the first round.
The truth is that the Jacksonville Jaguars could go in several directions with the exception of quarterback in the draft and most of them would make sense. Would they take Harrison if they have Walker Little waiting in the wings? They should if they think he’s going to make them a better team.
