No. 4 cap casualty the Jacksonville Jaguars should target: Shaq Mason

One year after winning Super Bowl 56, the Tampa Bay Buccanneers will undergo significant turnover in 2023. For starters, it looks like Tom Brady will at last retire. Even if he changes his mind, the Bucs seem to be ready to move on. But the quarterback position won’t be the only position that will look different next season.

Tampa Bay is set to be an astonishing $56 million over the cap and will need to part ways with several players to get out of the red and keep costs low in 2023. Offensive tackle Donovan Smith, who is set to count $17.9 against the cap, is a prime candidate to get released but he isn’t the only Buccaneers offensive lineman that could get a pink slip this offseason. Shaq Mason might not return to Tampa next season either.

A fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2015, Mason was traded to the Bucs last year and went on to start all 17 games. But due to the cap crunch Tampa Bay is currently experiencing, they could release him to free up $5.27 million in cap space with $4.3 million in dead money.

The Buccaneers’ offensive line allowed a league-low 22 sacks last year and Mason gave up just one sack and 25 total pressures on 834 pass-blocking snaps.

The Jacksonville Jaguars gave Brandon Scherff a three-year deal worth $49.5 million last offseason to play right guard, Mason’s position. However, they could switch Mason to the right side and have him compete with incumbent Ben Bartch, who is coming off a knee injury that wiped out his 2022 season.
