4 Jacksonville Jaguars players who won’t be missed in 2023
No. 1 player the Jacksonville Jaguars won’t miss in 2023: Marvin Jones Jr.
On the surface, this might look like an odd entry but it makes sense once you take into account how stacked the Jaguars’ wide receiver room will be in 2023. Make no mistake, Marvin Jones Jr. is still going strong and could help several NFL teams. In fact, he was one of Jacksonville’s best players in 2021, catching 73 receptions for 832 yards with four touchdowns (all team highs) that year.
Moreover, Jones deserves praise for standing up to Urban Meyer, who routinely threatened to fire players whenever they made a mistake, even if it was an inconsequential one. But as much as the Jaguars would love to keep Marvin Jones, there are a couple of things working against him.
First, the Jags gave top-market contracts to both Christian Kirk and Zay Jones last offseason, and Calvin Ridley is expected to be reinstated from the suspension he’s currently serving for betting on football games in 2021. This isn’t a case of a player not being good enough though. Simply, there might not be room for Marvin Jones nor enough cap space to re-sign him in the offseason.
In Jones’ favor, it doesn’t look like this year’s wide receiver market will be particularly strong and he will be one of the best ones available. Back in 2021, the former Cal Golden Bear signed a two-year worth $12.5 million and he could get a similar one this offseason, so he will probably be just fine.
