No. 3 player the Jacksonville Jaguars won’t miss in 2023: Dan Arnold

Tight end Dan Arnold recently popped up on a list of players that underachieved last year, so you might think that this writer is trying to beat a dead horse but that’s not the case. In fact, he showed promise when he joined the Jaguars in the middle of the 2021 season and seemed poised to have a huge role in Doug Pederson’s offense in spite of the addition of Evan Engram in free agency.

However, Arnold ended up not having much of an impact last year, appearing in just 15 percent of the Jags’ offensive snaps and catching nine passes for 135 yards. Heck, he had more receptions (35) and yards (408) in 2021 even though he only joined the Jaguars before Week 4 and ended up appearing in just eight games.

Looking back, there are many reasons Arnold couldn’t pick up where he left off and didn’t get much playing time last year. For starters, Engram had a career year and it was hard to justify pulling him off the football field. On the other hand, Chris Manhertz hardly got any targets but he carved a niche as a blocking specialist.

Luke Farrell is currently the only Jaguars tight end under contract and re-signing Engram is probably one of the Jaguars’ top priorities this offseason. But even if Engram walks in free agency, Manhertz might have a better chance of re-signing than Arnold, who probably wants a chance to earn more playing time.
