Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is a polarizing figure among Jacksonville Jaguars fans after leaving in non-amicable terms in 2019. But that hasn’t stopped speculation about a potential reunion and Marcus Mosher of Pro Football Focus suggests the Jags give the Los Angeles Rams a call.

Mosher drew up a list of trades that could shape the 2023 season and argues that Ramsey would be a great addition to the Jacksonville defense. He goes on to cite the Rams’ dearth of draft picks and cap space as reasons they could place the cornerback on the trade block.

"With the Rams short of draft picks (due to the Stafford trade) and cap space ($14 million over the cap), could the Rams trade Ramsey this offseason? It’s certainly possible, as Ramsey has just $5 million in guaranteed money left on his deal. And wouldn’t a return to Jacksonville just be perfect now that the Jaguars are contenders in the AFC once again?Ramsey would join a defense with one elite cornerback in Tyson Campbell (80.8 grade in 2022) and a young pass-rush unit. Ramsey is still a fantastic player, as he had the second-best grade of his career (86.4) during the 2022 season. If he to were to join this defense, Jacksonville would have one of the most talented rosters in the league going into the 2023 season."

Ramsey was the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and was a key cog on the Jaguars’ defense when they reached the AFC Championship in 2017. However, his relationship with the front office eventually deteriorated, and was traded to Los Angeles in 2019 when he couldn’t get the long-term deal he was looking for. The former Florida State Seminole is still among the best cornerbacks in the league, so he could certainly give the Jags’ secondary a boost. He’s coming off a season in which he registered 18 pass breakups, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Jalen Ramsey would be an unnecessary luxury for the Jacksonville Jaguars

This isn’t the first time someone suggests the Jacksonville Jaguars inquire about Ramsey. In fact, B&T recently share three proposals to land him. Having said that, pulling off a trade might be a tough task for the Jags Make no mistake though, Ramsey would form one of the top cornerback tandems alongside Tyson Campbell but bringing him back might not make much sense.

Leave aside his exit from the team; Ramsey could’ve handled it better but let’s not act as if the Jaguars’ brass, former vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin in particular, didn’t play a role in the fallout. Keep in mind that Ramsey doesn’t have a reputation as a bad teammate, so there’s no reason to think a potential second stint in Jacksonville would go much better.

On the other hand, Mosher fails to mention that the Jaguars currently have a tight budget and they might not be willing to part ways with draft picks or any other resources to trade for Ramsey. Moreover, they already have a pretty good outside cornerback in Darious Williams, who fared well once he moved to the perimeter. Thus, pursuing Ramsey seems unnecessary.

Ramsey would give the Jaguars’ secondary a boost and the Jaguars could find a way to trade him if they really wanted to. However, they have other roster needs that require their attention this offseason, so a trade seems unlikely.
