Jacksonville Jaguars land TE Darren Waller in 1 of these 3 trades
Tight end Evan Engram signed a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars last offseason and quickly became a mainstay of their offense. Besides setting career highs for both catches and receiving yards, the former Ole Miss Rebel broke several team records.
However, Engram is slated to become a free agent. He’s made it clear he wants to return to Jacksonville and he’s at the top of the organization’s priority list but there’s a chance he will hit the open market. If that’s the case, the Jags could target Michael Mayer or Dalton Kincaid in the draft but if they want to use their first-round pick on another position, they should consider acquiring Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller.
Waller and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could be available via trade, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. This doesn’t mean the Raiders will definitely trade him but they could certainly listen to offers and the Jaguars should give them a phone call.
Even though Waller missed eight games and caught just 28 passes for 388 yards in 2022, he was one of the top tight ends in the NFL as recently as 2020, when he hauled in 107 receptions for 1,196 yards with nine touchdowns. In fact, the only reason he didn’t earn an All-Pro designation was that Travis Kelce was a unanimous selection.
Waller signed a contract extension last year and is set to count $12 million against the cap. Trading him would free up $3 million in cap space with a dead cap hit of $8.9 million. However, Las Vegas could make use of the post-June 1 designation and split the cap hit in two.
So let’s say the Jaguars can’t aren’t able to reach an agreement with Evan Engram, here are three trade hypothetical trade packages for Darren Waller.
