4 strongest position groups on Jaguars roster ahead of 2023 offseason
2. Jaguars biggest strength ahead of the 2023 offseason: Wide receivers
Wide receiver was arguably the Jaguars’ biggest weakness following the 2021 season but the front office managed to give the unit a big makeover. Although Laquon Treadwell became one of Trevor Lawrence’s most trusted targets near the end of the year, he wasn’t brought back. Similarly, the Jags traded Laviska Shenualt Jr. before the start of the season.
Even though Shenault was entering just his third season in the league, he was no longer needed following the signings of Christian Kirk and Zay Jones in free agency. Even though Baalke’s decision to sign both Kirk and Jones was heavily criticized at the time, he got the last laugh.
Jones has already set a career high for yards in a season and Kirk is close to registering his first 1,000-yard campaign. Moreover, Marvin Jones Jr. has also had a solid year as the WR3, catching 38 passes for 439 yards with three touchdowns.
Marvin Jones is slated to become a free agent in 2023 and it’s hard to see him returning given that the Jags won’t have much cap space. However, they already got a replacement for him in Calvin Ridley, whom they acquired from the Atlanta Falcons before this year’s trade deadline.
Ridley was one of the top receivers in the league before he abruptly retired in 2020. He’s currently serving a suspension for betting on NFL games but if he picks up where he left off, the Jaguars’ wide receivers corps could go from good to great next season.
