No. 2 Jaguars offensive group entering Week 1: Quarterbacks

To nobody’s surprise, the Jags are carrying only two quarterbacks into the regular season. While undrafted free agent E.J. Perry has plenty of upside, it didn’t make sense to give him a roster spot, so he was stashed in the practice squad, where he can work on his craft. Maybe he can compete for the backup job next year but he’s nothing more than a developmental project at this stage of his NFL career.

For the time being, C.J. Beathard is No. 2 quarterback on the Jaguars’ depth chart. The Iowa Hawkeye only saw the field for a handful of snaps last year, which is precisely what you want from your top backup. If he were to play in 2022, it’s because Trevor Lawrence struggled mightily (highly unlikely) or got injured (not ideal).

Speaking of Lawrence, it looks like the Jaguars won’t have to worry about the quarterback position for a while. The former Clemson Tiger showed flashes last year despite the fact that there wasn’t a competent head coach at the helm and his supporting cast was less than optimal.

With Doug Pederson leading the way and a revamped arsenal of weapons, Lawrence should have a very productive sophomore campaign. While he might not be a top 15 passer just yet, he could very well be by the end of the season and as long as he remains healthy, he will give the Jags a chance to win every Sunday.
