Third-year safety Daniel Thomas won’t be starting for the Jacksonville Jaguars any time soon but he’s off to a great start against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3 of the 2022 NFL Preseason.

With the Jaguars’ coaching staff choosing to rest most of their projected starters, Thomas got the start and he intercepted Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder’s very first pass attempt. Here’s the video of the play.

E.J Perry is the starting quarterback for the Jaguars. Once Jacksonville gained possession, the offense went third and out. Perry was less-than-stellar, going 1-of-2 for 3 yards. Still, kicker James McCourt, who joined the team just a few days ago, nailed a 54-yard field goal, giving the Jags a 3-0 lead. With Trevor Lawrence sitting the game and backup C.J. Beathard not expected to play, he will most likely play the whole game.

Jaguars S Daniel Thomas made the most of his chance vs. the Falcons

Later in the game, Thomas gave up a 17-reception to wide receiver Damiere Byrd but he’s making the most of his chance to start. He and Andrew Wingard will be the primary backups at safety, with Rayshawn Jenkins and Andre Cisco entrenched as the starters.

In the past three preseason games, Thomas appeared in 79 total tackles and made four tackles. The Auburn Tiger was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He made two starts in his rookie campaign but an arm injury cut his season short.

With the Jags signing Jenkins in free agency and drafting Cisco last year, Thomas was relegated to the sidelines for most of the year. However, he started the last two games and finished the season with 27 total tackles.

The Jaguars eventually gave up a two-yard touchdown pass. As of this writing, the Falcons are winning 7-3. If Perry plays the remainder of the game, there’s a chance Atlanta will win this one. On the bright side, he has plenty of time to make an impact.
