The Jaguars are looking for a kicker to round out their special teams

Special teams (3): Ross Matiscik, Logan Cooke, James McCourt

Logan Cooke was pretty busy last year. He had to punt often because the Jaguars’ offense struggled to move the ball and convert downs. He’s back, and so is long snapper Ross Matiscik. The elephant in the room is the kicker position.

The Jags moved on from Matthew Wright earlier this year and since then, there’s been a revolving door at the position. They signed undrafted rookie Andrew Mevis to compete with Ryan Santoso but he’s already been released.

Santoso also got his walking papers after missing two field goals against the Pittsburgh Steelers, including one that could have won the game, in Week 2 of the preseason. They also brought in Elliot Fry but his stint in Jacksonville only lasted a few days.

The Jaguars are probably hoping that the fifth time is the chart and James McCourt is the answer after claiming him off waivers not long ago. Doug Pederson told the local media that the Philadelphia Eagles went through six kickers in 2017 before settling on Jake Elliot, and they went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

The last thing the Jaguars want in 2022 is to lose a meaningful game because their kicker missed a last-minute field goal. They put together a solid offense, to go along with a stout defense. Hopefully, McCourt will fix their woes at kicker and if he doesn’t, they will need to keep throwing darts at the wall until they get the position right.
