Jaguars WR Marvin Jones Jr make insane catch in Falcons joint practice
Wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. was one of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ best (and few) difference-makers on offense last year. And he’s making his presence felt and reminding everybody what he’s capable of doing with an insane, one-hand catch during the Jags’ joint practice with the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday.
Jones is one of several handful Jaguars that is making an impact early on. However, his catch might be the highlight of the day. Here’s the highlight-reel reception, via Jamal St. Cyr of News4JAX, who traveled all the way to Flowery Branch, Georgia to cover the Jaguars’ joint practice.
Here’s another angle of the play, this time courtesy of the team’s official Twitter account.
This isn’t the only play Jones has made Wednesday though. Demetrious Harvey of Big Cat Country says the former Cal Golden Bear has already made a pair of impressive catches. He points out that one was ruled out of bounds, “but really impressive nonetheless“.
Jones’ grab has gotten plenty of attention but the veteran wide receiver isn’t the only Jaguar who has shown out against the Falcons. Trevor Lawrence connected with tight end Chris Manhertz for a touchdown reception, per St. Cyr. Laviska Shenault Jr. also caught a touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Jake Luton, per William McFadden of SB Nation’s The Falcoholic.
The Jaguars count on Marvin Jones Jr. to make plays in 2022
Jones was expected to be the Jaguars’ No. 2 receiver last year but took on a bigger role when DJ Chark Jr. (now with the Detroit Lions) went down with an ankle fracture in Week 4. Despite the fact that opposing teams often zeroed in on Jones, he was able to tally a solid 73 receptions for 832 yards with four touchdowns.
Even though the Jags added Christian Kirk and Zay Jones to their wide receiver corps in free agency, Jones figures to be a big part of the Jaguars this upcoming season. In fact, he should be able to put up favorable numbers precisely because defenses will now have to stop the other Jones and Kirk.
There weren’t many bright spots on the Jaguars’ offense last year but Jones was one of them. He and Trevor Lawrence should be able to pick up where they left off in Week 18 of the 2021 season.
