The Jacksonville Jaguars will open training camp on July 24th and will hold their first practice on the 25th. There will be many storylines to follow, including how much Trevor Lawrence has improved since the end of the 2021 season, and the development of Travon Walker, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

Lawrence and Walker won’t be the only players under the spotlight though. These five Jaguars are under pressure to perform and must generate early buzz in training camp.

No. 5 Jaguars player who must shine in training camp: Ryan Santoso, K

The Jaguars went through two kickers last year, Josh Lambo and Matthew Wright. The former was released during the 2021 season and later sued the organization for being allegedly kicked by Urban Meyer during warmups. Wright took his place and even played a big role in helping Jacksonville win their first game of the year. Alas, he was also given his walking papers earlier this year.

Looking back, Wright’s release wasn’t particularly shocking when you take into account that the Jaguars had inked Ryan Santoso in free agency and later signed Andrew Mevis as an undrafted free agent.

Santoso and Mevis will compete in training camp for the Jaguars’ kicker job. It’s possible that Satantoso will have the upper hand due to his veteran status but he must impress the coaching staff right off the bat or his slight edge will evaporate quickly.

If the battle ends in a tie, the Jags might be inclined to go with Mevis, as he would be the cheaper option of the two. That’s why Santoso’s room for error in the upcoming days will be slim to none.
