Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd “feeling ultra confident” ahead of training camp
Even though the Jacksonville Jaguars won’t report to training camp until July 24th, rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd has managed to stay busy over the last few weeks. Besides having the chance to learn from former All-Pro edge rusher Robert Mathis, Lloyd has spent time with the community, hosting a youth football camp at Naval Air Station.
Ashlyn Sullivan of the Jaguars’ official website recently shared a clip of the youth camp Lloyd held. Jamal St. Cyr of News4Jax had the chance to talk to him after the event. The rookie linebacker says he’s “feeling great” and “ultra-confident” ahead of the regular season. He goes on to say that he and his teammates are excited about the team the Jags have put together.
"I’m excited about everybody in the building. And everybody I’ve talked to this offseason is excited, they feel the same type of joy and excitement that I have. So I really just can’t wait to get out there."
A two-time First-Team All-Pac 12 at Utah, Lloyd will tentatively start opposite veteran Foyesade Oluokun when the Jags face off against the Washington Commanders in Week 1 of the 2022 season. The California native appeared in 36 for the Utes and logged 256 total tackles, 43 tackles for a loss, 15.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Here’s Lloyd’s conversation with St. Cyr in case you want to give it a look.
Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd is already making an impact in Jacksonville
If the Jaguars didn’t feel good about Lloyd, they wouldn’t have jumped back to the first round in this year’s draft to select him 27th overall. Middle linebacker was one of the team’s biggest needs and they were even linked to Georgia’s Quay Walker, who was ultimately snagged by the Green Bay Packers at No. 22.
In the end, it looks like things worked out for the Jaguars, as they got a promising young player in Lloyd. While he’s yet to wear pads, it’s hard to picture him starting the regular season on the bench. In fact, he might be an early candidate to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.
Many things could happen between now and the end of the season. Maybe Lloyd does win the DROY award and leads the Jaguars in tackles. For the time being, it’s nice to see him already making an impact in the community.
