NFL teams that finish a season with a losing record can do two things: Either stick to what they’re doing and expect to improve or make the necessary changes and upgrades. After finishing 3-14 in 2021, the Jacksonville Jaguars took a latter route.

Heading into training camp, this Jaguars team looks significantly different from their 2021 counterpart after a busy offseason. However, some of the moves the organization made raised a few eyebrows. With that in mind, here are the four strangest decisions Jacksonville made in 2022.

No. 4 Jaguars strangest decision – Pay a premium for Zay Jones

The Jaguars needed to revamp their wide receiver corps after finishing 32nd in receiving touchdowns last year. Sure, Trevor Lawrence was just a rookie finding a way in the pros but he didn’t really have a solid supporting cast. He deserves some of the blame for the team’s inability to reach the end zone but so does the front office for not giving him enough weapons last season.

Lawrence should improve under the direction of head coach Doug Pederson. Also, the front office got him a pair of wide receivers in Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. However, they paid a premium to do so, which would be fine if both of them were proven commodities but that wasn’t the case.

In particular, Jones has only amassed more than 600 receiving yards once in his five-year NFL career and has only had more than two touchdowns in a season once. That’s not the kind of production that warrants a three-year, $24 million deal but that’s precisely what the former East Carolina Pirate got from the Jaguars’ brass this offseason.

The Jaguars expect Jones to play a key role on offense in 2022 and there’s a chance he will precisely that. But it’s a gamble, one the front office decides to take in free agency.
