No. 2 Jaguars surprise roster cut: Laquon Treadwell, WR

Just like Tre Herndon, wide receiver Laquon Treadwell also got a one-year deal from the Jags earlier this year and given his contributions to the offense late in the 2021 season, it’s easy to see why. A first-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings in 2016, Treadwell landed in Jacksonville last season, and while he was released before the start of the regular season, he was signed to the practice squad and later to the active roster.

The former Ole Miss Rebel had struggled to find his footing in the NFL, hauling in more than 30 receptions in a season just once in his first five years in the pros. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 but had a minimal impact, catching a measly six passes for 49 yards with two touchdowns. This writer saw Treadwell as nothing more than a depth move at best and a camp body at worst, which looks like a cold take in retrospect.

Treadwell joined the Jags’ 53-man roster in November and from Weeks 11 to 18, he was targeted five times or more per game, and in that span, he hauled in 31 receptions for 405 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately for him, Jacksonville signed Zay Jones and Christian Kirk in the offseason and both of them will get featured roles in 2022. Marvin Jones Jr. should still start and Laviska Shenault Jr. is competing for playing time.

Last season, the Jaguars leaned on Treadwell because they had nobody else to turn to but now that their wide receiver corps is in better shape, he could become expendable.
