4 Jacksonville Jaguars facing a make or break preparation period in 2022
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Doug Pederson to fill
the void left by Urban Meyer last year
. This is good news for plenty of players but not so great for others. On one hand, everyone will get a fresh start, and those that struggled last season could benefit from it. However, Pederson inherited the roster, so he could move on from anyone he doesn’t think fit his program.
Organized Team Activities will give Jaguars players the chance to make a case. These four are entering a make-or-break preparation period ahead of the 2022 season.
No. 1 Jaguars player facing a make-or-break situation: Chris Claybrooks
The Jaguars have a talented trio of starting cornerbacks but they also have solid depth at the position, having used a couple of late-round picks in this year’s draft on Montaric Brown and Gregory Junior. If that wasn’t enough, the team’s brass re-signed veteran Tre Herndon earlier this year.
This surplus at the position could turn third-year cornerback Chris Claybrooks into a victim of the numbers game. The 2020 seventh-round pick has made six starts over the last two seasons and has mostly seen playing time whenever injuries have struck Jacksonville’s secondary.
Claybrooks has also handled returned duties but the coaching staff is currently having several players fielding punts to see who is the best option if star returner Jamal Agnew isn’t ready to go in Week 1. This could make it difficult for Claybrooks to stick with the Jags in 2020.
You could make the case that Jacksonville got plenty of mileage out of Claybrooks these past two seasons but there might not be a roster spot for him in 2022 after all the additions the Jaguars made this offseason.
