5 most underrated moves the Jacksonville Jaguars made this offseason
No. 3 Jaguars underrated move this offseason – Signing CB Darious Williams
The Jaguars took advantage of their surplus of cap space this offseason and made several splash signings in the first wave of free agency. Despite the fact that cornerback wasn’t a need due to the presence of Shaquill Griffin and Tyson Campbell, they didn’t hesitate to give Darious Wiliams a three-year deal worth $30 million.
Sure, the slot could have used an upgrade but the Jags didn’t have to sign one of the top cornerbacks in free agency, but that’s precisely what they did. Eve though it might’ve been an unnecessary expense, Williams will give Jacksonville’s secondary a boost.
After going undrafted in 2018, Williams signed with the Baltimore Ravens but was waived later the same year. The Los Angeles Rams rushed to claim him and although he hardly played as a rookie, his role progressively increased, and eventually joined the starting lineup in 2019. Over the last three years, the former UAB Blazer made 26 starts and logged six interceptions and 27 passes defensed. Furthermore, he’s posted Pro Football Focus overall grades of 78.8 or higher in two of the last three seasons.
Williams mostly played outside in Los Angeles but he will likely line up in the slot for the Jaguars. At 5’9″ and 187 pounds, he has the size and the length to play nickel but if either Griffin or Campbell suffers an injury or have to miss games, he can slide to the boundaries. Either way, Jacksonville’s cornerback room looks like a strength ahead of the 2022 season.
