2. Jaguars sleeper pick in the 2022 NFL Draft – Montaric Brown, CB.

Team evaluators shouldn’t expect late-round selections to become Pro Bowlers and if they do, they should move to another line of work because it’s unrealistic. More often than not, seven-round picks are fringe players that turn out to be backups or contributors on special teams. However, there are always exceptions and clubs stumble upon gems every now and then. Maybe the Jaguars did precisely that with Arkansas cornerback Montaric Brown.

The Jags took Brown just one round after taking Gregory Junior of Ouachita Baptist University in the sixth. While it’s true that you can never have enough cornerbacks, it was kind of puzzling to see Jacksonville double-dip at a position that wasn’t a need. Nevertheless, it seems like they didn’t feel comfortable passing up the chance to acquire the former Arkansas Razorback.

Brown will probably need to climb a steep hill just to make the roster and he’ll need to refine his craft if he wants to get playing time as a rookie. He will need to take advantage of every single rep he gets in training camp but having the flexibility to play safety and make an impact as a returner could help him stand out in the upcoming months.

The Jaguars have a talented trio of starting corners in Shaquill Griffin, Darious Williams, and Tyson Campbell, so Brown won’t probably start any games for the Jaguars anytime soon. On the other hand, he might have a legitimate shot to become a solid backup.
