No. 4 Jaguars player in a worse roster spot – Chris Claybrooks, CB.

You can never have enough cornerbacks and the more you have the better you’re set to withstand injuries. The Jaguars know this firsthand and have been affected by the injury bug more than they probably want. Back in 2020, their three starting cornerbacks D.J. Hayden, C.J. Henderson, and Sidney Jones missed plenty of time with injuries, which forced the team to rely on players such as Luq Barcoo, Tre Herndon, and Chris Claybrooks.

Then a rookie, Claybrooks made four starts and posted four passes defensed and 39 total tackles. The former Memphis Tiger once again started two games last season, logging two passes defensed and 29 total tackles. Moreover, he’s handled return duties over the last two years. He’s proven to be a valuable backup and reliable when called upon. However, he could tumble down the depth chart in 2022.

The Jaguars gave Darious Williams a three-year worth up to $39 million in free agency and also re-signed Tre Herndon. If that wasn’t enough, general manager Trent Balkee invested late-round picks in Gregory Junior and Montaric Brown in this year’s draft. Brown in particular has experience as a returner and while he and Junior won’t be competing for a starting spot anytime soon, they could move ahead of Claybrooks on the depth chart.

It’s uncertain how many cornerbacks the Jags want to carry in 2022 but Claybrooks might have a hard time seeing the football field and could even spend a good amount of the year at the bottom of the depth chart.
