Ranking the Jacksonville Jaguars last 5 first-round picks
2. Jaguars 1st round pick in 2021, 1th overall – Trevor Lawrence, QB.
There are different ways to look at Trevor Lawrence and his performance in 2021. On one hand, he was the most talented quarterback prospect to enter the NFL draft since Andrew Luck and was seen as the consensus No. 1 pick. However, he struggled as a rookie and went on to post 17 interceptions, tied with Matthew Stafford for the league’s lead. Moreover, there was an eight-game stretch in which he threw five interceptions and just five touchdowns.
Having said that, Lawrence arrived at a situation in which most rookie signal-callers would have had a hard time thriving. The Jaguars’ were devoid of talent at most position groups, including wide receiver, and to add insult to injury, DJ Chark Jr. and Jamal Agnew suffered season-ending injuries, limiting the number of options Lawrence had at his disposal.
Then, there’s the Urban Meyer debacle. The Jaguars’ former head coach didn’t seem to have a plan in place to develop his quarterback and disagreed with his coaching staff on the kind of offense they would run.
Knowing the Jaguars needed to do a better job of putting Lawrence in a position to succeed, they went into a shopping spree this offseason and made changes to both their offensive line and their wide receiver group. With a better supporting cast in place and under the tutelage of head coach Doug Pederson the former Clemson Tiger should show significant improvement in Year 2.
