Free agency will officially start on March 16 but the league tampering period will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET. This means that even though NFL clubs can’t sign players until Wednesday, they can agree to the terms of a deal, which will in turn make for a hectic Monday and Tuesday.

Ahead of free agency, teams have re-signed their own players. The Jacksonville Jaguars gave interior offensive lineman Tyler Shatley a two-year deal and applied the franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson. However, they still have ample cap space to make a couple of splash additions in the upcoming days. If the Jags want to address some of their positional needs in free agency, they can then sign any of these players.

No. 1 free agent the Jaguars can sign to fill a need – Evan Engram.

Two months ago, the tight end class seemed poised to be a good one but Dalton Schultz, Mike Gesicki, and David Njoku got tagged. Moreover, the Arizona Cardinals announced they agreed to a three-year deal worth $31.65 million with Zach Ertz Sunday night.

With four of the top options at tight end off the table, the Jaguars should turn their attention to Evan Engram, who has averaged 52 catches per year over the last four seasons. A first-round selection by the New York Giants in 2017, the Mississippi product isn’t a great blocker but can be a matchup nightmare when he lines up in the slot.

The Jaguars need a tight end to pair with Dan Arnold who was a key cog in the Jaguars’ offense before an MCL injury cut his 2021 season short. Engram seems to be the Jags’ best bet ahead of free agency.

Other players who deserve consideration: O.J. Howard, Maxx Williams.
