One of the most critical needs for the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason is at wide receiver. However, for a team that’s in the midst of a rebuild, they will need to be realistic with its potential free-agent signings. Therefore, Russell Gage would be an underrated pickup with great upside.

What fan wouldn’t want Davante Adams or Chris Godwin on their respective teams? The Jaguars certainly wouldn’t mind either one, but the team has too many holes to splurge on one single position. The NFL draft will provide some options, but Gage is a proven commodity that can give second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence a reliable option.

As a member of the Atlanta Falcons, Gage has performed admirably the last two years. He accumulated 1,556 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during that stretch. Additionally, Gage has proven to be invaluable in moving the chains, totaling 87 catches that were first down conversions. New Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson could certainly use someone with this level of talent.

What can Russell Gage do for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022?

Gage could flourish as a number two or three option for the Jaguars. The wide receiver position was rather underwhelming last year, with Marvin Jones emerging as the closest thing to a number one wideout. Gage is no stranger to filling big shoes, as he was responsible for providing a spark for the Falcons once Julio Jones was gone and Calvin Ridley stepped away from the game.

Gage’s ability to separate from defensive backs in man coverage is noteworthy. He showed in Atlanta an ability to consistently beat his man with excellent catches while being contested in midair. His body control is solid, and he isn’t afraid to catch a pass in the middle.

Getting Lawrence a true possession receiver that will fight for balls thrown his way is a great way for the young quarterback to start building some confidence. At 26, Gage still has years of football left in him. Pro Football Focus predicts that Gage could get a four-year deal with about $15 million guaranteed. For what you’re getting in Gage, this would be a smart investment for general manager Trent Baalke and the Jaguars.
