It took a bit to get it done but former Tampa Bay Buccaneers inside linebacker Mike Caldwell has officially become the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator, per Field Yates of ESPN. The hire makes sense when you take into account that Caldwell and Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson have known each other for a while. In fact, the duo has previously worked together, first as players for the Philadelphia Eagles and later as assistants in Andy Reid’s staff.

Rest assured, the Jaguars’ defense will be in good hands. Head coach Bruce Arians and linebacker Devin White have spoken highly of Caldwell, who is taking over a unit that ranked 28th in points allowed and 20th in total yards last season.

Under Joe Cullen, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jags’ defense made strides in 2021, so it will be up to Caldwell to pick up where his predecessor left off. To do his job, Caldwell could ask the Jaguars’ front office to bring some of his former players. Also, some Buccaneers’ free agents could bolt to Jacksonville due to his presence, including these four.

No. 1 Buccaneers free agent the Jaguars can sign – Jason Pierre-Paul.

While defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is no longer the dominant player he was in his prime, he’s still been pretty productive since joining the Bucs in 2018, logging 171 total tackles, 55 tackles for a loss, eight forced fumbles, and two interceptions.

A two-time Pro Bowl nod, Pierre-Paul doesn’t come to mind first when thinking of the Buccaneers’ top players in 2021 but he’s been a valuable contributor on their defense the last four seasons. He’s still got some gas left in the tank and could become a veteran voice in the Jaguars’ locker room.
