No. 2 Raiders free agent the Jaguars can sign – Johnathan Hankins, DT.

The Jaguars did a good job of stopping the run in the first half of the 2021 season, giving up more than 100 rushing yards in a game just twice. However, things went sideways in the second half and gave up 100 yards or fewer in just two matchups. The front office needs to reverse the trend and fortify the defensive front this offseason.

While it makes sense to bring back defensive tackle Adam Gotsis and DaVon Hamilton showed growth in his sophomore campaign, the Jags could get one of the best run-stoppers in the league in defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins.

A second-round pick by the New York Giants in 2013, Hankins signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2017 and joined the Raiders on a one-year deal the following year and has spent the last four seasons with them. In that span, he’s made 60 starts and logged 172 total tackles, 91 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. The veteran defensive tackle won’t offer much in the pass rusher department (14.5 sacks in his nine-year career) but he’s pretty good at stopping the run.

Last season, Hankins earned $3.5 million and the Jaguars may need to give him a similar deal if they are interested in acquiring his services. On a surface level, that might seem like a steep price to pay for a two-down defender but it may be worth it if they can bolster their defensive line rotation.
