No. 2 Cardinals free agent Jaguars can sign – James Conner, RB.

In an ideal scenario, Jaguars running backs Travis Etienne and James Robinson wouldn’t have suffered serious injuries last year but that’s not how things played out. Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason that cut his rookie campaign short. Meanwhile, Robinson hurt his knee in Week 8 and later tore his Achilles in Week 16.

While Etienne is a good bet to return in training camp, Robinson faces a long recovery and it’s uncertain if he will be available for the season opener. That’s why the Jaguars must err on the side of caution and add insurance to their running back room this offseason. The front office could use one of their middle or late-round picks in the 2022 draft to address the position but they could also sign James Conner in free agency.

Last offseason, the Jags had the chance to ink Conner but opted for Carlos Hyde instead. Looking back, they might have made the wrong decision but they will have the chance to rectify it They could release Hyde and free up $2 million in cap space, which they could then use to sign Conner.

A third-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, Conner signed with the Cardinals last year and went on to the rock 202 times for 739 yards with 15 touchdowns. Despite the fact that he averaged 3.7 yards, he’s averaged 4.1 throughout his five-year career. Conner isn’t the kind of player opponents will spend the night game planning for but would be an excellent addition to Jacksonville’s running back group.
