4. The Jaguars’ decision to keep Blake Bortles and not Allen Robinson.
Hindsight is 20/20 but letting wide receiver Allen Robinson walk in free agency has been one of many questionable moves the Jaguars have made in the past few years. A contract was in question with Robinson’s knee injury in 2017 but he showed he was fully healthy once he signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bears, posting more than 1,100 yards in back-to-back seasons.
The struggles for Jacksonville to find a true number one wide receiver since Robinson left are no secret. They have not drafted well in the early rounds and have failed to consistently get production from the position. I would like to see him sign back with the Jags to have a solid contributor on offense. If he can bounce back after having down season in 2021, he would give Trevor Lawrence a target he can trust.
Cutting ties with Robinson was just one part of the problem. Trying to make it work with Blake Bortles was a mistake, as he was holding the offense back. It is such an important position on the team that the Jaguars should have been trying to revamp for a while. Something that puzzles most of the fanbase is the justification of the extension.
These two players fit the question of “what were the Jaguars thinking?”. Every move affects the future of the franchise. These two decisions puzzle me. They put the offense at a disadvantage in a negative way. What might the offense look like with Allen Robinson instead of Bortles? Probably better since Robinson went on to thrive in Chicago while Bortles hasn’t done much of note since being cut by the Jags.
