2021 was arguably the Jacksonville Jaguars’ worst season in franchise history and that’s saying something when you take into account that this is a team that has struggled to win games over the last ten years. In theory, Urban Meyer was expected to turn things around but left the team in worst shape than it was when he inherited it. Linebacker Myles Jack recently acknowledged the dysfunction had a negative effect on him and other players.

Jack met with the local media Thursday and talked about how the dysfunction led to players often making mistakes.

"There’s not one person in particular, but it’s just kind of been a thing where we shoot ourselves in the foot, you know what I mean? Like we’ll be getting a drive and then maybe we don’t get a stop on third down or maybe the offense has a hiccup and may sit back and second along like we just can’t beat ourselves. And I’d say that this disorganization that dysfunction leads to us beating ourselves."

Of course, Jack isn’t going to mention any games and isn’t going to call anyone out. He’s a professional but he’s also human and just like anyone else who was in a toxic environment, he was going to see a drop in production working in that kind of condition. Think about it, the veteran linebacker had to be in a place where players weren’t treated like adults and Urban Meyer would question his staff’s credentials. Moreover, his actions would contradict his words, and his message about “owning it” fell flat, as he always looked for a way out and never held himself accountable.

What kind of head coach do the Jaguars need to hire?

During his sitdown with the local media, Jack was asked about the kind of head coach the Jaguars need moving forward. The 2016 second-round pick says he doesn’t care if they got someone who is a nice man or has a nice personality. He wants someone whose words hold weight and someone that can help the team win games.

"We just need number one, a leader of men somebody that when they say something, it holds weight… Everything’s detail, you can tell like it is a finished product, they’re giving something to us… It just needs to be number one, a leader, man number two is got to be somebody who’s just it’s about ball. You know what I mean? It’s about winning."

Jack might be implying that some of the head coaches he’s played for don’t know what they’re doing and do you blaming for wanting to have someone that does? Being a first-time head coach means that you need to figure some things on the fly but one thing is to experience growing pains on the job and a whole different one to be unqualified for the job. Urban Meyer falls in the latter category. The Jaguars need to hire someone who will press the right buttons, get the most out of every player and win many games.

The Jags have put together a solid list of head coaching candidates and most of them would do a good job of righting the ship. As important as acquiring talent will be for the team’s future success, hiring the right head coach will go a long way towards getting out of the cellar. They will have a chance to get it right in the following days.
