No. 2 player who could sing swan song with Jaguars – Tre Herndon, CB.

Former Jaguars general manager David Caldwell wasn’t good at finding talent in the first round of the draft but he had a penchant for identifying undrafted talent. The most famous example is running back James Robinson but he wasn’t the only one. Another player Caldwell signed as an undrafted free agent that went on to become a key contributor in Jacksonville was cornerback Tre Herndon.

After going undrafted in 2018, the Vanderbilt product signed with the Jags. Although he barely saw the field as a rookie he worked his way up the roster and went on to start 28 games in the following two seasons. A restricted free agent last offseason, the Jags signed him to a one-year deal.

Herndon was supposed to have a significant role in 2021 and even former head coach Urban Meyer praised him during the offseason. However, he suffered an MCL injury during the offseason that forced him to miss four games. Once he return, he wasn’t 100 healthy and lost his job in the slot to defensive back Rudy Ford.

The young veteran cornerback has barely played since Week 12 and it doesn’t look like that will change in the season finale. He’s slated to become a free agent and isn’t a lock to return to Jacksonville. Herndon suffered a serious injury in a contract year, so it’s uncertain what his market will be. He can play both outside and in the slot, so he could certainly help a team. It remains to be seen if it’s the Jaguars.
