The Jacksonville Jaguars knew they need to revamp their roster this offseason, so they wasted no time adding players in free agency. Some of the acquisitions have worked out better than others but wide receiver Marvin Jones has been deemed the best of the bunch in a recent list.

Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report recently wrote about every NFL team’s best-buy in the 2021 offseason and Jones was the pick for the Jaguars. Sobleski doesn’t think Jacksonville had a particularly good offseason but believes the 2012 fifth-round pick was their best free-agent signing. Then again, Sobleski isn’t impressed with the Jags’ 2021 free-agent class.

"The idea of placing Marvin Jones Jr. as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ “best buy” when the team’s wide receivers haven’t played particularly well speaks to how poorly the organization’s offseason acquisitions have gone."

On the other hand, Sobleski says Jones is worth the $4.8 million he’s making in 2021. All things considered, the California product was off to a good start this season, hauling in 28 receptions for 343 yards and three touchdowns in the first six games. However, the whole Jaguars’ offense has had a slump in recent weeks and everyone’s not just Jones’ production has gone down.

Shaquill Griffin can make a case as the Jaguars’ best-buy in 2021.

You could argue cornerback Shaquill Griffin should have made the list over Jones, as he’s been the best player in the Jaguars’ backfield this offseason. In his article, Sobleski notes that Griffin “has been solid” but argues that the Jags’ pass defense ranks in the bottom half. However, you should assess the cornerback based on his individual work, not a whole unit’s performance.

The 2017 third-round pick has allowed a 67.9 percent completion rate but has generally done a good job of keeping opposing wide receivers in check. Also, Griffin has become one of the team’s most vocal leaders, which is one of the reasons he was signed this offseason.

Having said that, Griffin isn’t the only player worthy of the best-buy tag. Wide receiver/return specialist Jamal Agnew had a big impact on both special teams and the offense before he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11. The San Diego product broke off a 66-yard touchdown run against the Indianapolis Colts and hauled in a receiving touchdown against the Seahawks in Week 11. Moreover, he has two return touchdowns, a 109-yard failed field goal against the Arizona Cardinals and a 102-yard kickoff against the Denver Broncos.

Sure, the Jaguars had some misses in free agency but the truth is that one season was enough to address all their roster needs. Nevertheless, it’s unlikely they’re feeling buyer’s remorse over Griffin, Jones, and Agnew.
