Jaguars: CB Stephon Gilmore wasn’t a good fit for 3 reasons
1. The Jaguars might have not liked Stephon Gilmore’s asking price.
Insider Josina Anderson reported that Gilmore wanted to make $15 million a year in the open market. It’s highly likely that the Panthers will pay him that amount. Otherwise, he would be a one-year rental in Carolina.
You could make the case that Gilmore still has two or three years left in him. However, his salary demands are too high. Keep in mind that the Jaguars aren’t one player away from contending. Gilmore would have been an unnecessary luxury, one that the Jaguars don’t need in their rebuild year.
You could argue that the Jags refrain from pursuing big-name free agents in 2021 because they’re fully aware this is a development year and it may not have made sense to allocate so much cap space to just a few players. The biggest contract the team’s brass handed was the three-year, $40 million deal cornerback Shaquill Griffin got. Next was safety Rayshawn Jenkins’s five-year deal worth $35 million. Other than those two, the Jags opted not to spend big this year.
Why would they depart from that approach now? Jacksonville is currently 0-4. How much difference would Gilmore have made? As good as he is, he won’t help the Jaguars win five extra games this season.
