Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad full of enticing players, 4 takeaways
The Jacksonville Jaguars should look for another quarterback.
Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard are the only two quarterbacks on the Jaguars’ roster. After trading Gardner Minshew to the Philadelphia Eagles, it looked like Jake Luton had a chance to make the team. He was ultimately waived and later claimed by the Seattle Seahawks.
Although some teams like to carry three signal-callers, others prefer to keep just two and assign the other roster spot to a player that will contribute in every game. Third-string quarterbacks rarely see the field, so it wasn’t shocking to see the Jaguars go into the season with just Beathard and Lawrence.
On the other hand, it’s kind of bewildering that they don’t have a third quarterback ready to go in case either Lawrence or Beathard miss time. Then again, there may not be many enticing options available. Will Grier, arguably the best passer on the waiver wire, was claimed off of waivers by the Dallas Cowboys.
Cam Newton is currently a free agent after losing the quarterback battle to rookie Mac Jones in New England. The former MVP may be the best passer available but he may not be a fit in Jacksonville. Maybe the Jaguars won’t sign a quarterback unless they really have to. However, they should err on the side of caution and acquire someone before the start of the season. That would give him the chance to learn the system, instead of needing to get ready on short notice.
