Jacksonville Jaguars: 5 waiver wire targets after roster cutdown day
The Jacksonville Jaguars trimmed down their roster to 53 players before the 4:00 p.m. EDT deadline on August 31. There were certainly some surprises such as defensive tackle Taven Bryan making the team over Doug Costin. Releasing veteran safety Jarrod Wilson was another one. In the end, the Jags are in better shape than they did at this point last year. But they aren’t done though.
The team’s brass will continue to tweak the roster before the start of the season opener. They will most likely sign some of the players they released to their practice squad but they should also take a dive into the waiver wire and look for potential additions to their roster.
Every player that has less than four accrued seasons is subject to waivers. According to the NFL Football Operations webpage, claims are granted in the same order as the one in which teams drafted in the first round in that year up until the third week of the regular season. That means the Jags will get to choose first. Following the fourth week, assignments are given in the inverse order of the league standings.
Here are five players the Jaguars should target in the waiver wire, which will run on September 1, at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
Jacksonville Jaguars waiver wire target No. 1 – QB Will Grier
Quarterback Will Grier lost the battle for the right to back up Sam Darnold to P.J. Walker. The 2019 third-round pick has shown flashes throughout his career but has never been able to find his footing in the NFL.
The Jaguars already have a solid backup in C.J. Beathard and they can always sign sophomore quarterback Jake Luton to the practice squad. On the other hand, Grier could benefit from a change of scenery and flourish in Jacksonville.
