With roster cuts looming, one Jacksonville Jaguars player to keep an eye on is Tim Tebow. After spending several years away from football, he’s attempting to make a comeback. But instead of playing quarterback like he did during most of his collegiate and pro career, he’s now making the transition to tight end. The 2010 first-round pick has a steep hill to climb to make the team but Florida head coach Dan Mullen believes he has a unique skill set that will help him be on the Jaguars’ roster in Week 1 of the 2021 regular season.

Back in May, Mullen appeared on the NFL Network and said Tebow can be a tight end in the NFL. The head coach points out that he won’t be your traditional “hand-in-the-ground blocking tight end“, via 247 Sports.

"And I think they’ll have (to) create, maybe some little packages — move him around the field and have some fun. He’s going to end up as a tight end, he’s going to be more of a hybrid-type guy."

Dan Mullen believes Tim Tebow has a unique set of skills.

When asked if Tebow would be on the Jaguars’ roster on Week 1, Mullen said he hopes so and went on to compare the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner to an Oscar-nominated actor.

"I never put anything past Tim of doing things…  We’ll see. I’m not there so I think he could. He’d be an interesting guy in that position because I think he brings different value of a guy that has a different skill set, right? It’s a guy who has developed a unique set of skills through the years that makes him very dangerous to people like them … what’s that movie? Liam Neeson, Taken? You want to be a guy with a unique set of skills."

Mullen went on to say that Taken is an all-time great movie, slightly ahead of Replacements. On one hand, the Takken comparison is pretty cool. Neeson’s character brings down three criminal organizations throughout the Taken film series. On the other hand, there’s no better movie than the academy-snubbed The Replacements and it should be at the top of everybody’s movie list. Here’s the whole clip if you want to look at it.

Will Tim Tebow be on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster in Week 1?

Looking back, the assessment of Tebow since he signed with the Jaguars hasn’t changed much. Also, it isn’t often that you are compared to the actor who played Oskar Schindler, the Lion in Chronicles of Narnia, and Qui-Gon Jinn in the Star Wars saga.

Going back to Mullen’s comments, it’s hard to tell if Tebow will be on the roster in Week 1. He has worked hard and done everything he’s asked to do. The Florida product is in great shape and has put his athleticism on display. Even though he’s 34 (happy birthday!), he doesn’t look out of place on Jaguars’ training camp. The other side of the coin is that he has his work cut out and needs to improve as a pass blocker and a receiver.

Another thing working against Tebow is the presence of sophomore Ben Ellefson. The sophomore has had a solid training camp and may claim the last tight end spot on the roster with Chris Manhertz, James O’Shaughnessy, and rookie Luke Farrell taking the other three.

It’s time for Tebow to show that unique skill set of his and show the Jags he deserves a roster spot.
