5 Jacksonville Jaguars players who may have already peaked
Over the last few months, the Jacksonville Jaguars added several players that should contribute right out of the gate. They signed cornerback Shaquill Griffin and safety Rayshawn Jenkins to bolster their secondary.
The Jags also added wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. and tight end Chris Manhertz to upgrade the offense that failed to score many points in 2021. However, the team’s biggest offseason acquisition was arguably quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
If the Clemson product lives up to expectations, the Jags should immediately get better. On the other hand, they can’t solely depend on Lawrence. They will also need a few veterans to play at a high level for the team to compete week in and week out. Will they all be up to the challenge?
Here are five Jaguars that may have already peaked and could be past their prime.
1. Andrew Norwell, Jacksonville Jaguars guard.
Back in 2018, the Jaguars signed Andrew Norwell to a five-year contract that made him at the time the highest-paid offensive guard in the NFL. Although he hasn’t been bad, he has been great either. The Ohio State product earned a First-Team All-Pro designation one season before getting his blockbuster deal.
Last season, Norwell started 13 games and appeared in 77 percent of the team’s total offensive snaps. He also posted a healthy 67.9 Pro Football Focus overall grade and allowed just 15 total pressures. Nevertheless, the former Buckeye will turn 30 this year.
Although Norwell was part of trade talks before the draft, the Jags ultimately decided to keep him. They restructured his contract and the veteran guard will become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Maybe the team’s brass thinks Norwell’s best days are behind him, so it’s up to him to show he deserves another hefty payday in 2022.
