When the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Tim Tebow, they knew they were getting a project instead of someone who could contribute right out of the gate. The former Gator is currently making the transition from quarterback — the position he’s played throughout his football career — to tight end. So far, he’s gotten support from several players, including All-Pro Travis Kelce and AFC South rival Mo Alie-Cox.

More recently, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller has offered to help Tebow with the switch. The 2020 Pro Bowl nod says that he would “love to help him and help make his transition smoother”, via TMZ. Waller acknowledges that playing tight end is no walk in the park. He then mentions that back when he was learning the nuances of the position, “I tried to find any information I could from watching guys play or asking people when I move”. Now, he would like to pass on what he learned and help Tebow be a better player.

Tebow has put his head down and has been grinding since day one. Waller believes this is why he will pull the switch successfully, “football is in his blood, so I feel like he’ll find a way. He’ll find a way. He’s physical, he’s athletic. So, I wish him nothing but the best going forward”.

Waller was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. The Georgia Tech product dealt with substance abuse early in his career and was suspended for the 2017 regular season. However, he cleaned his act and has gone on to become a top tight end with the Raiders. Over the last two seasons, the Georgia Tech product has appeared in 32 games and hauled in 197 receptions for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Darren Waller would be a great mentor for Tim Tebow.

Waller entered the league as a wide receiver but he switched to tight end in 2016. The move paid off as he caught just two passes in his rookie campaign. He’s arguably the second-best tight end in the league and the only reason he didn’t earn an All-Pro designation last season was because Kelce was a unanimous selection and voters left the Second-Team slot vacant.

Tebow wasn’t invited to Kelce’s tight end university but he’s doing everything he can to make the switch. It won’t be an easy task though. The only reason he got a chance was that he’s got a strong relationship with Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer, who says the 2010 first-round pick will be evaluated just like every other player on the 90-man roster. Also, he’s 33, which is old by NFL standards.

Nevertheless, Meyer believes Tebow can help the Jags. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have vouched for him. Also, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner may not play a true tight end role. He could play in special packages in short-yardage and red-goal situations. His college head coach knows what he can or can’t do, so he will look for ways to put him in a position to succeed.

Any help Tim Tebow can get will help and having a Pro Bowl tight end in his corner should definitely increase his chances of playing tight end for the Jaguars in 2021.
