The Jacksonville Jaguars were the worst team in the NFL last year. Although they beat the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener, they went on to lose their following 15 games. Looking back, it’s easy to see why the Jags were able to muster just one victory. Injuries exposed their lack of depth. The offensive line couldn’t block and opposing offenses had no trouble scoring at ease.

In order to turn things around, the Jaguars moved on from head coach Doug Marrone and hired Urban Meyer to take his place. They also promoted Trent Baalke to general manager after giving David Caldwell the pink slip late in the 2020 season. With new leadership in place, this Jacksonville team underwent a makeover this offseason.

Meyer and Baalke spent the offseason adding depth and playmakers to the roster. There are still a few position groups that could still get some help but the Jags should be able to win more games in 2021. On the other hand, they need to set reasonable expectations. They are in the early stages of a rebuild and it may be a while before they get things going. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try to win the AFC South in Meyer’s first year at the helm though.

It’s not unusual for teams to go from last to first in just one year. Even though winning seven or eight games would constitute a successful season, the Jaguars should be a prime candidate to compete for a division title this upcoming season. It won’t be an easy task, but the Jags could win the AFC South in 2021 if these four things happen.
