Jacksonville Jaguars roster: 5 players who are on the roster bubble
These two might not be with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.
2. Brandon Rusnak (formerly Brandon Watson), cornerback
Injuries hit the Jaguars’ cornerback room hard last year. They lost C.J. Henderson, Sidney Jones, and D.J. Hayden for several games, so they added reinforcements this offseason. They signed Shaquill Griffin in free agency and drafted Tyson Campbell in the second round of this year’s draft. Henderson should get his starting job back and play opposite Griffin. Jones should get a significant amount of playing time and Tre Herndon will have a role as well.
Since signing with the Jags as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Brandon Rusnak has appeared in 24 games with one start and has logged 29 total tackles. However, he hasn’t registered a pass defensed or an interception. If he makes the team, it will be because of his value in special teams. Last season, the Michigan product played 85 percent of the team’s total snaps on special teams.
1. Taven Bryan, defensive tackle
You knew this one was coming. Taven Bryan has been a non-factor since the Jaguars made him the 29th overall pick in 2018’s draft. Although he hasn’t missed a game over his three-year career, he has failed to have an impact on the football field. The Florida product never played more than 46 percent of the team’s total defensive snaps and that number would probably be lower if injuries hadn’t hit the Jags’ defensive tackles.
The team declined Bryan’s fifth-year option on his rookie deal, so the writing may be on the wall for him. You could argue that he should get a clean slate with the new coaching staff. After all, many players from the previous regime will but so far, he hasn’t shown enough to warrant another chance. Despite the fact that it would be great to see Bryan turn things around, the truth is that he might be on borrowed time.
