Are Jacksonville Jaguars a good fit for Tim Tebow?
By Donny Rieber
There is no denying that the former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow has a strong connection with Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer after their success with the Florida Gators. Also, nobody will argue Tebow is one of the best football players in college history, and it seems inevitable that the 2010 first-round pick will join the Jags, but is he a good fit?
The Jaguars have a need at tight end and Peter King of NBC Sports says that Tebow could land in Jacksonville after rookie minicamp. Keep in mind that Tebow made his living at quarterback and had some success with the Broncos, including winning a playoff game, but if he joins the Jags, it will be as a tight end.
Tebow’s attention then turned to baseball in 2016, playing in the Minor Leagues for the New York Mets until retiring earlier this year. That means he hasn’t played in a meaningful football game since 2012. Nine years is a long time to be away from a game that is constantly changing and evolving.
There were reports that teams tried to get the former Gator to play tight end, and he wanted no part of it, as “that just wasn’t in his heart”. Now, he is all for playing the position that he was opposed to so many years ago.
How could Tim Tebow help the Jacksonville Jaguars?
To be fair, there is no way to know how successful Tebow would have been as a tight end even if he had agreed to a position change from the start. That said, it is hard to believe he is going to have the ability to play the position now, after giving his focus to baseball.
There is no reason for the Jaguars to make this move except to get butts in seats as they say. There is no doubt that having Tebow on the roster would bring fans in. Even though the Mets denied signing Tebow as a publicity stunt, that’s precisely what they did. The Jaguars don’t need publicity, they need wins.
There is no way to know exactly how the tight end will be used in Meyer’s offense until the team takes the field, but with names like Trey Burton and Tyler Eifer are still available at the tight end position, Tebow shouldn’t even be considered. Are the names here franchise player names? Absolutely not, but those and other available tight ends have had playing time more recently than the Heisman Trophy winner.
Nostalgia is a great thing in the right circumstance. The fan’s desire and even Meyer’s desire to unite the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tebow is understandable but the roster decisions need to make football sense and this move doesn’t do that. Giving Tebow a front-office position, or a consultant position would be a great fit. He has a good football mind and wants to win. His best opportunity to do that is behind the scenes, not on the field.
