The Jacksonville Jaguars have come out of Day 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft with a bolstered offense. They got their franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence and have an insane offensive weapon in running back Travis Etienne.

Many fans are upset that they decided to draft a running back that early in the draft. However, piecing together statements made by head coach Urban Meyer pre-draft, the addition of Etienne does not mean they are going to completely disregard James Robinson.

In a tweet by Mia O’Brien (First Coast News reporter), she helps clarify the decision behind the draft pick. Coach Meyer’s outlook for the position is to have Robinson and Hyde as the one-two punch while Etienne is slated to be the third-down back.

The Jaguars are set up for a solid Day 2

Drafting Etienne at 25th overall sets up the Jaguars to take their pick of the remaining first-round talents who happened to fall in the draft.

The frequently named prospects who could still land in the Jaguars’ lap are linebacker Jemeriah Owusu-Koramoah, edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, offensive tackle Teven Jenkins, and safety Trevon Moehrig.

Other available prospects include but are not limited to:

  • WR Elijah Moore, Ole Miss
  • DT Levi Onwuzurike, Washington
  • LB Nick Bolton, Missouri
  • OL Jalen Mayfield, Michigan
  • CB Asante Samuel Jr., Florida State
  • TE Pat Freiermuth, Penn State

The exciting aspect of the Jaguars picking at 33 and 45 (barring any trades) is that they could very well land two of these very talented players. Maybe someone falls to 65, and they get three. So far, considering the outlook, the Jaguars are shaping up to have their best draft ever in franchise history.

It’s still unknown as to what direction Jacksonville will choose to go in during Day 2 of the draft but some hints by Urban Meyer could have them targeting a safety and cornerback with their next two selections.

They could also opt to grab an offensive lineman early on to protect their new quarterback.
