Jaguars must trade up to draft TE Kyle Pitts, no matter the cost
The Jacksonville Jaguars would acquire the best tight end in the draft.
Kyle Pitts played a key role in the Gators’ offensive success in 2020, as he was one of quarterback Kyle Trask’s favorite targets. He creates matchup nightmares for the defense. Also, he’s too fast for linebackers, but he’s too big and physical for most defensive backs to defend him. He will get the catches whenever he pleases unless he is double covered.
However, a double coverage on Pitts would mean other playmakers would have more opportunities to get open. For the Jaguars, this would mean more chances to get the ball to DJ Chark Jr., Marvin Jones Jr., and Laviska Shenault Jr., players who can do significant damage to defenses with the ball in their hands. Moreover, young quarterbacks are typically more successful when they can count on a tight end, which would be good news for Trevor Lawrence.
All of this sounds great, but at what cost? Should Jacksonville mortgage their future for a tight end? Yes. Yes, a thousand times. The game is evolving, and the tight end position is becoming more crucial every year. Take a look at the landscape of the NFL.
There are only four elite tight ends in the game: Travis Kelce, George Kittle, Darren Waller, and one can still make a case for Rob Gronkowski. With the position being so thin, it is critical to acquire the best when possible, and the Jaguars have the ammunition to get the best one in 2021’s draft.
