Not long ago, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer told Peter King of NBC Sports that the team was leaning towards taking Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft, ‘I’d have to say that’s the direction we’re going’. He was recently asked about the Jags’ plans with the top pick and doubled down on his stance. Also, he explained what makes Lawrence such a great quarterback prospect.

During a recent appearance on The Michael Irving Show, Meyer once again said that the Jaguars plan to take Lawrence with the first overall pick. He mentioned that they’ve studied other quarterbacks and believes that if there’s a change, it will be at the ownership level. Also, he emphasized this has been a cooperative effort between himself, owner Shahid Khan, and general manager Trent Baalke.

"He’s certainly, that’s the direction we are leaning or have been in that direction. In case something changes, that’s going to be at the ownership levels. At this point, we’ve done our homework, it’s very close, there are some very good quarterbacks out there but that’s going to be owner Shad Khan, myself, and Trent Baalke. It’s pure cooperation. This will be the biggest decision made in recent history of the Jaguars. This will set the path, that pick and we have very good trade capital, draft capital, picks."

Meyer is right. This is going to be one of the most important decisions in Jaguars’ history but the fact this Jacksonville team will have a shot at drafting one of the most talented quarterback prospects in recent years should make things a little bit easier.

Trevor Lawrence is the quarterback the Jacksonville Jaguars need.

During their conversation, Irving asked Meyer how good Lawrence can be. The former Florida and Ohio State head coach said that the Clemson standout ‘checks all the boxes’ and possesses the five characteristics great quarterbacks share: Competitive spirit, toughness, leadership skills, intelligence, and adaptability.

Meyer says that great quarterbacks have to be elite competitors. In the same manner, he says that they need to elevate those around them, lead themselves, and lead others. He also points out that one of the reasons why Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is so great is his ability to adapt, ‘defenses are so good now you have to be able to adapt’.

The draft is around the corner but it seems like the Jaguars already know they will be taking Lawrence. More importantly, they know what kind of player he is and the things he can bring to the table.
