Ranking Jaguars defensive position groups ahead of 2021 NFL Draft
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ safety room could still use more talent.
The Jaguars mainly focused on adding depth to the roster in free agency but also signed a few big-name free agents, including former Los Angeles Chargers safety Rayshawn Jenkins. They also locked up Rudy Ford but the 2017 sixth-round pick will mostly see time on special teams.
Jarrod Wilson has started 28 games in the last two years and will probably have a shot at the starting job next to Jenkins. Daniel Thomas could also compete for playing time after showing promise in his rookie campaign. In fact, if he hadn’t sustained an arm injury in 2020, he could have seized the starting job.
Andrew Wingard also playing time last year and the team re-signed Josh Jones this offseason but both of them are better suited for backup roles. Brandon Rusnak also started one game last season but may have to compete for a roster spot this offseason. Heading into the draft, the Jaguars’ safety room isn’t bad per se but it lacks playmakers.
This Jacksonville team has plenty of needs to address in the draft but and should consider adding a safety in the draft. Richie Grant, Jevon Holland, and Andre Cisco should be available in the second round, so the Jags could focus on another position with the 25th pick and use one of their two second-round selections on a safety.
Wilson is in the last year of his contract and it’s uncertain if Thomas will continue trending up, so the team may want to err on the side of caution and add keep adding talent.
