Jacksonville Jaguars: Analyzing the last 5 players drafted 25th overall
The 25th overall pick in the NFL Draft lies within an interesting range of picks. This usually the point in the draft where we see teams trade up to draft prospects who have seen their draft stock fall a bit. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the next team on the clock with the 25th overall pick, barring any trades.
A few of the prospects who have been commonly mocked to the Jaguars in this spot are safety Trevon Moehrig, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, wide receiver Kadarious Toney, and offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi.
Jaguars must be careful with 25th pick
The last five selections at 25th overall are as follows:
- 2020: WR Brandon Aiyuk – San Francisco 49ers
- 2019: WR Marquise Brown – Baltimore Ravens
- 2018: TE Hayden Hurst – Baltimore Ravens
- 2017: S Jabrill Peppers – Cleveland Browns
- 2016: CB Artie Burns – Pittsburgh Steelers
Out of these five players, only Brandon Aiyuk and Marquise Brown remain with the team that drafted them.
Following the 2019 NFL season, the Steelers declined Artice Burns’ fifth-year option and he became a free agent. During his four years in Pittsburgh, he had four interceptions, 27 passes defended, and 149 tackles. Burns signed with the Chicago Bears early in 2020 but has yet to play a game for them after tearing his ACL shortly before the 2020 season was set to begin.
Jabrill Peppers was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the New York Giants after spending his first two years in Cleveland. With the Browns, Peppers had two interceptions, eight passes defended, one sack, and 137 tackles. He started all 29 games that he played for the Browns. In New York, Peppers still holds onto the starting job. He also has two interceptions with the Giants along with 16 passes defended, 2.5 sacks, and 167 tackles.
As for Hayden Hurst, he found himself in a crowded tight end room in Baltimore and was traded to the Atlanta Falcons before the 2020 season. He has nearly 1,100 receiving yards and nine touchdowns during his three NFL seasons.
While Aiyuk and Brown are still fairly fresh in the league, the Jaguars should be careful with how they approach the 25th pick. They have to ensure that they can properly develop any prospect they draft in that spot. While these past five players drafted 25th overall all have decent production, Jacksonville needs someone who can stick around for some time.
