Even though the Jacksonville Jaguars are getting ready for the 2021 NFL Draft, which is a few weeks away, they could still make a few additions to their roster, as there are still some players available in the open market, including running back Giovani Bernard, who was just released by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals announced they have officially released Bernard. A second-round pick in 2013, the North Carolina standout spent the last eight years in Cincy. He appeared in 115 games, with 30 starts, and racked up 921 carries for 3, 697 yards, and 22 touchdowns. While he was never a workhorse kind of running back for the Bengals, he was always dependable, averaging 4.2 yards per carry from 2013 to 2017.

However, with Joe Mixon entrenched as the Bengals’ featured running back, Bernard’s role has decreased in the last four years. Also, he hasn’t averaged more than 3.8 yards per carry since 2018 and posted a career-low 3.2 mark last season. On the other hand, Bernard is a good receiver out of the backfield, hauling in 342 receptions for 2,867 yards and 11 touchdowns during his tenure in Cincinnati, and adept at pass blocking.

Why should the Jacksonville Jaguars consider Giovanni Bernard?

The Jags already have a stud running back in James Robinson and signed Carlos Hyde this offseason. However, they should still add another running back. While Hyde can spell Robinson from time to time and play competently in case he misses games, they need to add as much depth as they can.

Last season, the Jaguars’ running game took a significant hit without Robinson in the lineup, and they can’t let that happen again. Bernard would offer a proven and affordable option but also a limited ceiling. Jacksonville could sign him, but could still add another running back on Day 3 of the draft, such as Khalil Herbert or Jaret Patterson.

The Jaguars’ brass would have to then decide if they want to carry four running backs into the season but that kind of decision is premature at this moment. Bernard could join the team and show what he can in training camp. If he can still contribute, Jacksonville wouldn’t mind keeping him in 2021.

So far, the Jags have done a good job of revamping their roster and adding depth this offseason. That doesn’t mean they should stop though, and should continue adding talent. That’s why signing Bernard makes sense.
