The Jacksonville Jaguars made a solid push in the first phase of the NFL free agency period but still have some glaring holes in their roster.

Trent Baalke, the general manager for the Jaguars, has said that the team’s philosophy is to build through the draft and supplement it in free agency. That can be a little tough considering free agency comes before the NFL Draft but it seems like the Jaguars are headed in the right direction.

Rather than investing in top-tier players—with the exception of cornerback Shaquill Griffin—the Jaguars opted for quantity and focused on stacking up on positions like defensive end and safety.

The lack of veteran presence was a major downfall for the team in 2020. They had to count on young players to get the deal done and were impacted by too many injuries.

Now, the Jaguars are set in terms of veteran power and now look to the 2021 NFL Draft to find players to develop for the future.

Quarterback

We all know that Jaguars are still missing the biggest piece to their roster: a starting quarterback. The Jaguars have remained patient when it comes to addressing this position, and rightly so. They’ve likely known their plan from the start and are just counting down the days until Draft Day to call Trevor Lawrence’s name.

The Jaguars had the option to sign Alex Smith as a veteran backup (who also has a history with head coach Urban Meyer) but they went with a bit of a safety blanket in former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, C.J. Beathard. Beathard is younger and healthier and has the quality experience to be a fill-in starter if Lawrence isn’t quite ready to go at the start of the season.

Jacksonville also has Gardner Minshew and Jake Luton still on the roster. However, it’s really unsure how much longer Minshew will be a part of the Jaguars organization.
